Location, location, location – in real estate and now in social media.
From Blaise Aguera y Arcas, Bing Maps Architect at Microsoft to Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai, Founders of Foursquare – innovators are beginning to capitalize on people’s desire for sense of place (in addition to their growing expectation for information) – now through a digital lens.
Remember when Google Earth was jaw dropping (and still is when you show your 89 year old Nonna)? And when searching with Bing became the new thing? According to information I snagged from Bing’s toolbox, there is more way-finding experience being released today… “We were proud of the initial release of Bing, but realized that it’s only a small down payment on a much longer-term effort… When we looked at what people were doing with search, we saw that people are increasingly trying to use ‘virtual’ systems to get things done in the ‘physical’ world… At Bing, we dug into this disconnect between search in the virtual space (today’s standard keyword search) and search in the physical space that folks are literally doing every day. We ended up developing something we’re introducing today: a new mapping experience that enables you to elegantly augment the things you’re already doing offline in your real life with an online experience. We like to call this “spatial search”.”
Features include new Streetside imagery, Application Gallery & Photosynths. Read about each of these features here http://www.bing.com/toolbox/blogs/search/archive/2009/12/02/bing-maps-connecting-people-places-and-things.aspx

Another mapping-mash craze that’s already a huge success, Foursquare.
