Summary of Responsibilities: The Controller reports to the President and is responsible for overseeing accounting operations and preparing financial statements and other financial analyses for review by the executive team. Working with the President and other members of the leadership team, the Controller helps determine the company's financial policies, its accounting practices, the conduct of its relationships with lending institutions, vendors, and other stakeholders. S/he oversees company bookkeeping functions and the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements and other financial reports as needed. With an understanding of strategic financial issues, s/he is firmly grounded in and involved in the operations of the finance department. The Controller manages a small team.
  • Oversees the Finance team in meeting the fiscal responsibilities of the company, including coordination of all fiscal activities to ensure accurate, complete and timely reporting of accounting transactions including accounts receivable, accounts payable, cash, payroll, company assets and company liabilities.
  • Defines, implements and maintains solid accounting policies and procedures, as well as a sound system of internal controls.
  • Ensures company compliance with all rules, laws and regulations pertaining to local, state and federal tax authorities and all applicable internal and external financial reporting requirements.
  • Ensures timely and accurate financial reporting to all external and internal parties.
  • Ensures that an effective and capable Finance team is in place, and that appropriate coaching and evaluation of staff is carried out in a timely way.
  • Provides assistance as necessary to the department managers and senior management in meeting their fiscal responsibilities.
  • Analyzes and evaluates pertinent financial data and communicate results to company management.
  • Maintains bank and relevant vendor relationships as they relate to daily operations of the Finance Department.

Required Qualifications:
  • Accounting Knowledge Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job)
  • Minimum three years of managerial accounting and/or auditing experience
  • Minimum three years of experience leading/managing staff
  • Strong working knowledge and background in all areas of accounting including: GAAP, annual budgeting, monthly forecast revisions, general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cost accounting, project accounting, banking, and federal, state and local tax
  • Deep knowledge with ERP system use and configuration, including report design and generation
  • Experience working with an outside payroll agency
  • Proficiency with Excel
  • Solid understanding of IT/IS systems
  • Ability to interface well with a diverse group of employees at all levels in the company
  • Strong analytic skills
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills

Preferred Qualifications:
  • CPA
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics SL
  • Experience working in a project-based, professional services environment (such as: creative agency, ad agency, architecture/engineering firm, construction)
  • IT/IS experience/exposure a plus
  • Five plus years of managerial accounting and/or auditing experience
  • Five plus years of experience leading/managing staff
