When Microsoft’s Xbox team wanted to create a memorable release event for their latest release of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, they knew who to call: TPN. Having partnered with Xbox in 2019 for the launch of the 2020 Flight Simulator game in Seattle, TPN’s creative and production teams were excited to bring their talents back for the 2024 version—this time with an even grander experience.

The 2019 event was held at a flight school in Seattle and created an immersive experience for the media and influencers who attended. Participants not only got to test out the game but also experienced flying in real prop planes on the same flight path featured in the game. The side-by-side comparison of actual GoPro footage with the in-game simulator showcased Microsoft Flight Simulator’s incredible realism. This high-touch, white-glove event gave attendees the chance to play the game, meet its creators, and partake in activities tied to the game’s aviation theme.

For 2024, TPN wanted to build on that foundation but push the envelope even further.

A New Flight Path at the Grand Canyon

The latest version of Flight Simulator focuses on aviation occupations, and this event would include participants taking helicopter rides over the Grand Canyon. Knowing the general location, TPN scouted and secured the venue, a hotel in Tusayan, a small town just outside the Grand Canyon National Park.

"A primary reason for choosing this location was for its proximity to the Grand Canyon and the significant role the canyon plays in the game’s new simulation," said Arthur Ung from TPN. TPN’s creative team took the design inspiration directly from the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 - Premium Deluxe SteelBook Edition, which features a sleek matte black metal case and a striking graphic element from the logo. The challenge was to design graphics that showcased the game’s stunning visuals without overwhelming the space.

The team wrapped the venue with graphics, covering existing hotel decor to create a cohesive look that brought the game to life. They wanted attendees to walk in and immediately be immersed in the Microsoft Flight Simulator experience. To achieve this, they even replaced hotel furniture with their own, hiding the western-themed elements that didn’t fit the brand aesthetic.

Overcoming Logistical Challenges

Executing a high-profile event in a remote location posed unique challenges. The small town of Tusayan had strict regulations about exterior signage and limited storage options, which made staging equipment tricky. And with Flagstaff, the nearest city, being over an hour away, any missing items that were needed required a three-hour round trip.

Despite these hurdles, TPN’s team adapted, making sure the event went off without a hitch. From hauling furniture up staircases to printing and transporting last-minute graphics from Anaheim, they were determined to deliver an unforgettable experience.

Four Days of Aviation Adventures

The event spanned four days, with groups of 25 attendees each day. The program kicked off at 7:00 a.m., with participants embarking on a Hummer tour of the Grand Canyon, followed by an immersive presentation and hands-on gameplay in the customized venue. The highlight of the day was the helicopter tour, giving participants the chance to explore the canyon from the skies before wrapping up with a happy hour.

Attendees ranged from press and Microsoft executives to social media influencers and content creators, all treated to an unparalleled experience that merged the world of Flight Simulator with real-world aviation.

TPN’s ability to create fully immersive, brand-aligned experiences was on full display at the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 Global Preview Event. From scouting the location to curating every design element, the event was a seamless blend of creative vision and flawless execution. With the Grand Canyon serving as both a real and virtual backdrop, attendees were left in awe of the unique blend of gaming and aviation that Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 offers.
